AUGUST 2024 NEWSLETTER

Dear Residents and Families,

Welcome to a vibrant and exciting August at Sierra View Senior Living! We’ve crafted a delightful array of activities, field trips, parties and events to keep everyone entertained and engaged. Here’s what we have in store:

We’re thrilled to start the month on August 1 with our new book club. We’ll dive into an excerpt from Moby Dick in the morning, followed by a whale watercolor session at 3 PM, and wrap up the day with a screening of the classic film Moby Dick. It promises to be a day full of adventure and creativity! Whale you be there? We sure hope so!

During the Olympics we are going to have our own Senior Resident Olympics! You score points by participating in exercise. Go for the Gold! Every Friday, Francesca, our talented dance instructor, will lead seated dance classes. These sessions are a joyful way to stay active and enjoy some great music and movement from the comfort of your chair. The first will be a fun filled Elvis themed soundtrack Dancercize, later in the month we will be practicing the hula! We are celebrating Hawaiian month in the month of August, so we will practice the hula to start getting ready for the luau coming up! And yes, you score points for the Senior Resident Olympics at Dancercise!

On Saturday, August 3, we are going to be hosting a meditation retreat for kids to provide them with an opportunity to enact their learning. Part of their journey is to practice responsibility and demonstrate maturity. The group of kids are teens, ages 13-17, who have decided to be part of this “coming of age” program over their summertime. The kids are school students who are learning important life lessons about adulthood. Their mission is to connect with another person through conversation and understanding. They are being asked to lead an interview with a resident from here, Sierra View! So please participate in this wonderful opportunity to share your experience of life and wisdom in adulthood with the next generation. Francesca will be available the next couple of days leading up to Saturday if you would like to participate please express your interest.

Later in the afternoon, on the same day, Saturday, celebrate Watermelon Day with us! Enjoy watermelon-themed watercolor painting, followed by a Tony Bennett movie while snacking on some refreshing watermelon. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a summer day together.

Monday sing-alongs are sure to bring joy and memories each week. Our first session will feature the timeless tunes of Fleetwood Mac, then the popular Everly Brothers, followed by the classic hits list of Johnny Cash, and more! Join us and sing your heart out!

Barbara’s lively Yahtzee games every Tuesday are a hit, and we’d love to see more of you join in the fun. It’s a wonderful opportunity to socialize and enjoy some friendly competition.

Wednesday, August 7, is Purple Heart Day. Wear your favorite purple outfit, engage in a purple painting craft, and listen to inspiring stories from our veterans at 11:30 AM. We’ll end the day with a special Purple Heart movie at 4:30 PM.

We’re excited about our trip to the Nevada County Fair on August 8! Those of you, who have signed up, we will meet in the lobby at 9 AM for a day of fun. Please try to get ready before breakfast, wearing a comfortable outfit you plan to wear to the fair, and put on sunscreen. We have sunglasses and hats for everyone to borrow. Seniors get free fair entry, and one attendant will assist each of you. We have arranged transportation for each person who signed up and their attendant. We will go after breakfast from 9:30AM to 11:30AM to see the fair entries, animals, and Treat Street. We will be back around noon before lunchtime. Please bring your own money for any treats you want to buy. We will provide petty cash to those who need it and then you will pay the balance of your expenses on your monthly bill. After lunch, the fair fun continues back at Sierra View with a chicken dance and fair-themed games. We can’t wait!

Join us for the Resident Council meeting on Wednesday, August 14. Share your thoughts and ideas, and stay afterward for our birdhouse building club to get creative and build birdhouses.

Friday, August 16, is Hawaiian Shirt Day. Wear your most colorful Hawaiian shirt and practice the hula with us at 10 AM. We’ll have a beach balloon game in the afternoon, followed by a Hawaiian happy hour in the evening.

Save the date for our luau party on August 23 at 5:30 PM. Families and friends are welcome to join the festivities—please RSVP to reserve a table. Leading up to the party, we’ll have activities like coral reef crafts and hula practice to keep the Hawaiian spirit alive.

We have some more fun National Days in August! Celebrate National Waffle Day with us on August 24 by decorating and enjoying delicious waffles. On August 29, it’s Hallmark Day. We’ll be writing heartfelt letters to our loved ones, sharing the warmth of our community through handwritten notes. Friday, August 30, is Beach Day! We’ll paint turtles, enjoy a game of beach volleyball, and end the day with a beach-themed happy hour, bringing the seaside fun to us.

In addition to these special events, we continue with our regular activities like chair exercises with Jeanette, cornhole, and bingo. We’re also adding a twist to our auction with a fun game of “Let’s Make a Deal.”

We’ve heard that more one-on-one time is important during our resident council, so to meet this need we will be blocking out time for room visits. To start, Bridget will be visiting residents in their rooms on Mondays at 10:30 AM for personal chats or visiting. If you have a card game you enjoy or want to teach— Bridget is excited to play!

We hope you’re as excited as we are for this fun-filled August! If you have any questions or need more information, please reach out to the activities department.

Warm regards,

The Sierra View Senior Living Team
