Dear Residents and Families,
Spring has finally sprung, and April is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. In this month's newsletter, we've got plenty of fun and exciting activities planned for you, along with some helpful tips to keep your gardens thriving this season.
But first, let's start with a little April Fools' Day fun! Did you know that in 1957, the BBC aired a prank documentary about spaghetti trees, claiming that Swiss farmers were harvesting noodles from trees? Many viewers fell for the hoax, and the BBC received hundreds of calls from people asking how to grow their own spaghetti trees. While we don't recommend trying to grow pasta, we do hope that this little prank brings a smile to your face.
Now onto the more serious matters - gardening! If you're looking to get your hands dirty this season, here are a few tips for growing plants in the Northern California region:
Start with the right soil: Many plants prefer a slightly acidic soil, which can be achieved by adding organic matter like compost or peat moss. Make sure your soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Know your zone: Northern California spans several different climate zones, each with its own unique characteristics. Before you start planting, do some research to find out which plants thrive in your specific zone.
Water wisely: In general, plants in Northern California need about an inch of water per week. However, this can vary depending on the type of plant and the time of year. Be sure to water deeply and infrequently, rather than giving plants frequent shallow waterings.
Join us for Earth day, April 22nd, to refresh our very own Sierra View’s garden. In addition to gardening, we've got plenty of other fun activities planned for April. Easter falls on April 9th this year, and we'll be celebrating with a visit from the Easter bunny!
We'll also be honoring National Volunteer Week (April 17-21) with a special card for our volunteers, who do so much to make our facility a warm and welcoming place. We want all of our residents to have the opportunity to say thank you so we will all sign a big card for each one of our amazing volunteers.
As always, we've got some exciting updates and news to share about our facility, staff, and residents. We're thrilled to announce that we've recently hired a new member to the CARE team, Lizzy. Lizzy is a dog lover and loves to work with people. She comes from another community with great experience, we are lucky to have her! We're also welcoming a new resident to our community this month, and we're looking forward to getting to know them better.
That's all for this month's newsletter - we hope you enjoyed it! And just in case you were wondering, there's no need to worry about spaghetti trees here in Northern California - we'll leave the pasta to the kitchen.
Warm regards,
Sierra View Living
